Caterpillar
This not so little gem was brought to us by a customer wanting an update of the radio gear. It was all steel box section or plate in construction, weighed a ton, and the main drive was provided by a couple of wheelchair motors, meaning it wasn't fast but boy it didn't stop for anything.
The original radio system was a on/off relay driven system on 433Mhz. This made it hard to do two things at once, such as driving it and operating the shovel, and as the main drive motors were on two seperate relays going in a straight line was also tricky. We installed some nice Mtroniks speed controllers and a Spektrum DX5e radio set. The delta wing mixing was used to convert the tank style drive into a more conventional forwards/backwards left/right layout. The right hand stick was replaced with a couple of spring loaded ON-OFF-ON switches, these operated the shovel at the front and the ripper at the rear. Once we sorted it all out we had a little fun re-arraging the shop.
